Show Kernel data on an Account

Add a Kernel tab to Salesforce Account records in Lightning Experience.

Add a Kernel tab to your Account record page so users can see the linked Kernel Account's fields without leaving the Account.

We recommend Salesforce's standard Related Record component. It displays values from Kernel_Account__c and keeps Kernel data separate from your Account fields.

This guide covers Salesforce Lightning Experience. Create the tab in Lightning App Builder. The Account page layout controls the lookup field; the quick action layout controls which Kernel fields appear.

Before you start

You need a Salesforce admin with Customize Application permission and the Kernel Salesforce package installed.

Choose an Account with populated Kernel data. Its Kernel Account lookup (Account.Kernel_Account__c) must point to the related Kernel Account record.

As a sync check, confirm that Linked Account on the Kernel Account (Linked_Account_Field__c) points back to the same Account.

The Related Record component follows Account → Kernel Account. A populated Linked Account field alone is not enough.

Give intended users Read access to the Account, the linked Kernel Account record, and each field you display. Start with Kernel Readonly PermissionSet and check record sharing. Check Read access to Account.Kernel_Account__c separately. If it is missing, grant it through a profile or permission set.

1. Add the lookup to the Account layout

  1. Go to Setup → Object Manager → Account → Page Layouts.

  2. Open the layout assigned to your users and Account record type.

  3. Add the Kernel Account lookup field to the layout, then Save.

Repeat for each Account layout used by your intended users. Salesforce requires this lookup on the main object's layout so the Related Record component can refresh. See Salesforce's Related Record component guidance.

2. Choose the Kernel fields to show

Create an action on Kernel Account, the object whose values you want to display:

  1. Go to Setup → Object Manager → Kernel Account → Buttons, Links, and Actions.

  2. Click New Action.

  3. Set Action Type to Update a Record.

  4. Enter Kernel account details as the label and Save.

  5. Open Edit Layout for the action. Add the fields your users need. Remove other fields where Salesforce allows it, then Save.

A useful starting set is:

Suggested value
API name

KERN ID

Kernel_ID__c

Legal name

Kernel_Legal_Name__c

Recommended headcount

Kernel_Headcount_Effective__c

Recommended revenue (USD)

Kernel_Revenue_Effective_USD__c

Operating country

Kernel_Country__c

Operational status

Kernel_Operational_Status__c

Labels can vary by package version. Use the API names to identify fields populated by your configuration. See the Kernel Account object reference for more choices.

The action defines the component's fields. Creating it does not copy values onto Account or run a sync. See Create object-specific quick actions.

3. Add the Kernel tab

  1. Open an Account in the Lightning app your users use. Select Gear → Edit Page.

  2. Select the Tabs component. If the page has none, add one in the main content area. Click Add Tab, choose Custom, enter Kernel, and click Done.

  3. Select the new tab on the canvas. Drag the standard Related Record component into it.

  4. In the component properties, set Lookup Field to Kernel Account and Update Action to Kernel account details.

  5. Set Header Label to Kernel data. Leave Create Action unset.

  6. Click Save, then check Activation. Assign the page to the intended app, record types, and profiles.

For the tab controls, see Add and customize tabs in Lightning App Builder. For page assignments, see Activate Lightning record pages.

4. Check the user experience

Open the same Account as a representative user in the assigned app:

  • Confirm the Kernel tab appears.

  • Compare its values with the linked Kernel Account record.

  • Check that users can read every selected field.

  • Check another Account record type if your team uses several.

Keep Kernel-managed values read-only for users through object and field permissions. The Related Record component supports editing for users with write access; an Update a Record action is not a read-only control. Review all assigned permissions if edit controls appear.

To report an incorrect value, use Send Kernel Feedback.

If something is missing

Symptom
Check

Kernel tab is missing

The active page assignment for the user's app, record type, and profile; also check tab or component visibility filters.

Kernel data is empty

The Account's Kernel Account lookup. If it is blank, ask your admin or Kernel team to check record sync and linking.

Update action is unavailable

The action must be Update a Record on Kernel Account, not on Account.

A field is missing

The quick action layout and the user's field permissions.

A field appears but has no value

Open the linked Kernel Account and check whether that field is populated by your sync configuration.

Access error

Read access to the lookup, the related record, and any lookup fields included in the action.
